How important is the water you use when cupping coffee? Turns out, very. The water chemistry will affect how the coffee tastes so we try to use the softest, neutral tasting water we can.
What does this mean in the real world? Depends on where you live, what’s coming out of your tap. For the purpose of cupping at home, if you have wonderful tasting water coming out of your tap, then use that.
If you live in London for instance, our water is pretty hard, so we need to filter or distil it using a Brita or something similar.
If you’re a purchaser of mineral water, that is good too.
There is a lot of geekery and nerdery going on in the ‘coffee water’ space at the moment. If we get into it, we will add to this, but for now, tap, filtered/distilled, mineral will do.
Boil slightly more water than you will use for the actual cups, you’ll need some for your rinsing glass and stuff as well.
